Capital Cellars is Downtown Frankfort’s best place to enjoy bourbon, wine, or a cold beer. We’re sure you already knew that! But, did you know that while you’re sipping your corn, enjoying your wine, or clinking glasses with your friends, you can also enjoy a rotating exhibit of local artists in our café area?

That’s right! We strive to bring local artists to our store for you to enjoy while enjoying a beverage or our food. This month, we are proud to welcome three local artists to showcase their art in our store. Here’s more about the artists!

These three artists are dedicated to the style or form of painting called plein air. In French, the term is translated as “in plain air”. In essence, the artist goes where the subject is. She packs up her studio (canvas, easel, paints, paintbrushes, etc), takes a hike out into the world, and sets up her studio wherever she is inspired to paint. You are out of the confines of the studio and you connect to the world in a way that no other method can. Claude Monet was a famous en plein air painter.

Karen Carey

Even when she was in a higher education career, painting was and is Karen’s first love. When she was not at work she often took classes and workshops in her spare time. She has studied or worked with Karen Spears, Gale Hartmann, and Bill Fletcher, to just name a few. She continually strives to find new ways to capture and to share the beauty she sees in the world.

Betty Beshoar

Betty Beshoar is a retired aquatic biologist and says that her training in this area gives her a unique insight into the landscape paintings she creates. Being out in nature has naturally led her to the plein air approach to painting. She might be deep in the woods to capture just the right subject. Betty is self taught and is both a painter and a fiber artist.

Bob McWilliams

Bob McWilliams is an artist based in Frankfort. Kentucky is his home state and he is always inspired by the beauty that exists here, especially in Central Kentucky. Using oil and acrylic paints, he is always riding the country roads in search of his next subject. Bob has studied under Bill Fletcher and reads, studies, and sees as much art as possible.
